The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of fluoride releasing orthodontic
adhesives on enamel remineralization around orthodontic bracket. The buccal surfaces of
90 premolars were polished, rinsed and dried. Standard area of exposed enamel was
provided with coating nail vanish except the area under adhesive coated labels of 10
mm diameter. The tooth was stored at 37¡É in each bottle for 26 hours with 20§¢ of
demineralizing solution. After teeth were washed out and dried, bracket was bonded on
middle part of demineralized enamel surface using 4 adhesives; OrthoOne as control
group, Ketacfil, Excel and FujiOrtho-LC as experimental group. Any excess bonding
agent was removed from around the bracket. The teeth were placed in indivisiual, sterile
bottles and immersed in 5§¢ distilled water for 1 week, 2 weeks and 4 weeks. After
each immersion, bracket was removed and each tooth was sectioned, embedded in
unsaturated polyester and polished with silicon carbide paper. The slabs were tested
using the Vicker's microhardness tester at three points. First point was located between
bracket base and 1§®, second point was located between 1§® and 2§®, third point was
located between 2§® and 3§®.
The results were as follows;
Fluoride releasing adhesives showed higher VHN compared with non-fluoride releasing
adhesive group. In fluoride releasing adhesive group, the VHN between bracket base and
2mm was higher than other points. FujiOrtho-LC group showed highest VHN among
fluoride releasing adhesives group at occlusal portion. In conclusion, fluoride releasing
adhesives enhance remineralization of white spot or early caries lesion near bracket base
and maybe helpful to prevent demineralization around bracket base during orthodontic
treatment.
